Tales from inventory #12: Jurgen by James Branch Cabell of Richmond, Virginia. So middle-aged pawnbroker Jurgen is walking home from work when he meets two Cistercian Monks. One stubs his toe and falls to cursing the devil for placing the stone in his path. Jurgen asks the monk what the devil has ever done to him that he should curse him so. The monks go on their way. Further down the road Jurgen meets a well-dressed black gentleman. Satan thanks him for the kind word & says he is going to do something for him. Jurgen is worried, but when he gets home he meets Nessus the centaur who takes him to the garden between dawn and sunrise & gives him a shirt rendering him irresistable to women. As you might expect he has Nessus take him to go meet Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Guinevere, and other great beauties of history. Cabell is a truly strange fantasy writer.
