You're all getting my free lecture on education & our ancestors. For starters they were smarter than we are; their brains weighed more. And they went to school six years. "Weren't they ignorant?" you think. Well, no. I bring to your attention these McGuffey Readers, used k-6 from the 1870s to the 1930s. If you look carefully at the last of the books used for 6th grade it's at the same reading level as a high school senior today. Also remember that our ancestors had to pay to keep their kid in school. If you could educate all 10 of them fine. If you couldn't you educated the boys. If you couldn't do that and one of your boys found school did not agree with him you'd give his spot to a more promising sibling. So our ancestors knew that when they turned 12 they'd be behind a plow or on a factory floor for the rest of their lives. They made their 12 years of childhood count.
