Tales from inventory #11: Lincoln. Can liberal writer Gore Vidal write a great historical novel? Yes he can. 657 pages told from the viewpoint of Lincoln's secretary, one of his assassins, and others. Draws a portrait of Lincoln not as a saint but as a politician, the smartest man in the room, who uses his endless supply of funny stories as a means of holding people at a distance. A few times in the book people around Lincoln quote Lincoln to Lincoln. He doesn't like it. Fascinating novel about a man who started a war costing at least 600,000 lives.
